Making Kids’ Books
Sometimes I have to pinch myself that I’ve been involved with over 110 children’s books since 2002 (see my complete book list), and I’ve written almost half of them myself. There are over three million copies of my work in print! It has truly been an amazing creative journey.
I’ve worked on picture books, chapter books, board books, joke books, novelty books and early readers. My titles include Fright Club, My Dad My Hero, The Stick Dog/Stick Cat series written by Tom Watson, Chamelia and the New Kid in Class, Scribbles and Ink, Give Me Back My Book (with Travis Foster) and Up, Tall and High, winner of the 2013 Theodor Seuss Geisel Gold Medal. In 2017, I was chosen to illustrate the 5 board book companions for the New York Times Best-selling picture book series Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site, written by Sherri Duskey Rinker.
People ask me which books are my favorite. My answer is that they are special in their own unique way. Granted, some have better design, some have better developed characters, and others have more complex stories, but they all make me smile. I’ve played with color, line, texture, collage, lettering and fonts, layout, character design, humor, narrative and speech bubbles. Many of my books have won special awards.
When I started out, my goal was to make books that were simple and funny, and I feel I’ve succeeded. Writing and illustrating children’s books has allowed me the opportunity of working with 20 different publishers as well as the gift of visiting schools and organizations all over the world. I believe that my purpose in life is to make people smile, lift their spirits, and inspire them to greater heights and I am committed to this purpose as the future unfolds. I’ve connected with some of the smartest and most talented people in the world. They have taught me so much about storytelling and life and I am forever grateful.
